In the 1400s, a single machine gave ordinary people access to ideas—and Europe’s rulers
were terrified. Around 1440, in Mainz, Germany, Johannes Gutenberg
developed movable metal type. Before this, books were copied by hand.
They were slow, rare, and controlled by elites and the Church. In 1455,
Gutenberg printed the Gutenberg Bible. It was cheaper, faster, and identical every
time. Printing presses spread rapidly across Europe. By 1500,
more than 20 million books were in circulation. Ideas now moved faster than armies. In 1517,
Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses were printed and distributed widely. They challenged
