The Industrial Revolution began in England because it had resources like coal and iron, a free economy that

encouraged entrepreneurship, and a growing labor force. Farming improvements, especially Jethro

Tull’s seed drill, increased crop yields and freed workers to move into cities. The first industry

to industrialize was textiles. In 1733, John Kay’s Flying Shuttle sped up

weaving. In 1764, James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny,

letting one worker spin several threads at once. In 1767, Richard Arkwright’s

Water Frame used water power for stronger yarn. In 1779, Samuel Crompton

combined both into the Spinning Mule, and in 1787 Edmund Cartwright introduced the Power Loom,
