The Room of Darkness

Every day at exactly 7:00 p.m., the lights in one room of the White House turned off.

Not because it was bedtime. And not because of a power problem. Only the president's

youngest child knew why. Years ago, a letter was found hidden behind a

bookshelf. It wasn't written by a president... but by a kid who lived there before.

The letter warned: "Never stay in this room after dark." So the president made a quiet rule.

No meetings. No staff. No guards. Just darkness. Historians still

don't know what the letter meant. But the rule is still followed. And no one has ever

explained why.
