On warm summer nights, tiny lights blink in the dark but what makes
fireflies glow like living lanterns? Are they trying to see in the dark or
are they sending secret messages? Inside their tails, fireflies have a special chemical called
luciferin that reacts with oxygen. Think of it like a glow stick when the
chemicals mix, light is released instead of heat. This reaction is called bioluminescence 'bio'
for life, 'luminescence' for light. It lets the firefly glow without burning itself.
But here’s the fun part different firefly species have their own blink patterns,
like unique light 'accents.' Those blinks are love signals males and females use
