The Titanic was built to be unsinkable, yet it sank in under three hours. Here's what actually
happened. In 1912, the White Star Line launched the largest ship ever built.
It had watertight compartments designed to keep it afloat even if damaged. On April 14th,
the ship received six ice warnings but kept moving at near top speed. When the iceberg
struck, it created a series of small openings along the hull. The watertight compartments
could handle four flooded sections, but the iceberg damaged six. As water filled
one compartment, it spilled over into the next, creating a domino effect.
The ship had lifeboats for only half the passengers because regulations were outdated.
