Ancient Japanese demons called Oni actually started as invisible forces of nature before
becoming the horned monsters we know today. These supernatural beings weren't always
depicted as red-skinned giants with tiger-striped pants and iron clubs. Originally, Oni were formless
spirits responsible for disease, natural disasters, and bad luck. Japanese folklore
transformed them into physical monsters during the Heian period when people needed something
tangible to blame for their misfortunes. The classic red and blue colors aren't random either.
Red Oni represent uncontrolled emotion and violence, while blue Oni symbolize sadness and depression.
Their iconic tiger-striped clothing comes from the belief that Oni lived in the northeast direction,
