into a beast. But the truth behind werewolves didn’t begin with magic…

it began with fear, and something far worse than a monster in the woods. The earliest stories

come from ancient Greece. There was a king named Lycaon, so cruel he tried

to feed human flesh to the god Zeus himself. As punishment, Zeus struck him

down and transformed him into the first wolf-man. That’s where we

get the word “lycanthropy.” But the legend didn’t stay a myth. By the Middle Ages, Europe was terrified

of real creatures in the forests— wolves that hunted villages, dragged children
