The Vanishing of the USS Eldridge

In October, 1943… a destroyer called the USS Eldridge vanished. Witnesses said it

shimmered— then disappeared entirely from the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Some claimed it reappeared in Norfolk, Virginia… two hundred miles away.

Others said the ship turned invisible— not just to radar… but to the human eye.

The Navy called it a test. An experiment in electromagnetic camouflage.

But sailors spoke of something else— men fused into the steel hull, screaming,

half alive, half gone. They said the experiment tore a hole in space. That it opened a
