The Victorian Fear of Premature Burial

In the Victorian era, the fear of being buried alive was a terrifying

reality. To prevent this nightmare, inventors created the safety coffin,

equipped with a bell. If the deceased woke up, a simple pull

of a string would signal for help Guards were paid to listen through

the night for the chime of salvation. But sometimes, the wind or

the settling earth would ring the bell instead. Leaving the watchman to wonder...

was it the wind, or a desperate soul?
