Three Lessons from Loving an Alcoholic

Loving an alcoholic taught me three things nobody warns you about. First,

you'll become a detective. Counting bottles and checking statements like it's a crime

scene investigation. Second, their rock bottom isn't yours. Rock bottom has

a basement, and that basement has a crawl space. You can't want

sobriety more than they do. No matter how hard you try to love them

sober. Third, you'll grieve someone who's still alive. Mourning the person

they were and the future you planned. Sometimes the most loving thing is

leaving. You can't save a drowning person if they're pulling you under.
