One man stood at ground zero… twice — and lived to tell the story. His name was Tsutomu
Yamaguchi, a Japanese engineer working for Mitsubishi. On August 6, 1945,
he was in Hiroshima on a business trip when the first atomic bomb exploded. Just three kilometers
from the blast, Yamaguchi was thrown into the air, burned, and temporarily
blinded — but he survived. Despite his injuries, he made the impossible journey home to
Nagasaki. Three days later, on August 9, while explaining the Hiroshima explosion
to his boss, the second atomic bomb detonated over Nagasaki. Once again,
Yamaguchi survived. He lived through radiation sickness, burns, and long-term health
