Bulk polymerization is a process where only the monomer and initiator are present in the
reaction. No solvents are used. Pure monomer and initiator are charged
into a reactor and heated. As conversion increases, viscosity rises sharply, making heat removal
difficult and risking a thermal runaway. Despite challenges, it produces high-purity polymers with no
solvent removal required, perfect for optical-grade materials. It is used to create Polystyrene,
PMMA, and Polyethylene, providing high clarity for various industrial uses.
Common applications include optical lenses, transparent plastics, and casting resins for precise laboratory
synthesis.
