Understanding the System of Oppression

When we speak of British rule in India, we often feel anger at the misery it

caused. Yet we must ask ourselves an honest question: why was this domination

possible at all? Weakness and ignorance invite despotism. The British profited from our divisions

because we allowed ourselves to be divided. Our mutual strife made their power

effective. This oppression was not the work of individuals, nor of an entire

people, but of a system—imperialism born of industrial capitalism—which exploits nations

and crushes millions. Some profit from it, but the masses suffer. A bad system cannot

be made good. If we truly seek freedom, let us not waste our anger on individuals.
