There is a place in history so dark it was kept a secret for decades. In a remote part
of China during World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army built a facility called Unit 731.
To the locals, it was a lumber mill, but inside they weren't processing
wood, they were processing people. The scientists there didn't refer to
the prisoners as humans, they called them maruta, the Japanese word
for logs. They were treated as disposable materials for experiments that sound like
nightmares. To study the effects of disease, prisoners were injected with the bubonic
plague and anthrax. To see how much the human body could endure, victims were placed
