Ever wonder why hot air balloons float into the sky? The secret comes
down to how warm air behaves. Air expands when it’s heated. As it expands,
it becomes less dense meaning the air inside the balloon gets lighter. The colder outside
air is heavier, so it pushes upward on the lighter air inside the balloon.
That upward push is called buoyant force. The burner below the balloon heats
the air, keeping it lighter than the surrounding air. The hotter the
air gets, the stronger the lift becomes. To go down, the pilot simply
lets the air cool or vents warm air out the top. That’s why balloons
