Whispers of the Fallen Soldiers

The attack wasn’t random. Afghan fighters had been tracking the British patrol

silently for days. First, they blocked the exit of the pass. Then they positioned

themselves high on both mountains, hidden among rocks. Within minutes, the front gun team

was hit. Then the rear guard fell. The entire patrol was trapped — unable

to move forward or back. The Afghan fighters used the darkness as cover,

striking from the cliffs. Some British soldiers raised their hands, trying to surrender…

But the echoes of the mountains swallowed their cries. When morning came, the pass was silent

again. All that remained were broken rifles, burnt lanterns, and pieces of British
