Why do fingers go numb in the cold, sometimes before they even start to
hurt? Your body tries to protect your core temperature first. So it reduces
blood flow to the skin in your hands. Blood vessels in your fingers tighten
or constrict, so less warm blood reaches the surface. With less warm
blood, the tissues cool down faster and cold tissues don't feel as well.
