Wojtek the Soldier Bear

Poland once had a bear in the army… and this is a true story. During World War

Two, Polish soldiers met a Syrian brown bear while traveling through Iran.

They named him Wojtek. The soldiers liked him so much, they officially signed him up as

a soldier. Yes—Wojtek became a real private in the army. He even helped carry

heavy ammunition during battles in Italy and quickly became famous among the troops.

After the war, Wojtek was retired like a real soldier and lived a peaceful life at Edinburgh

Zoo until 1963. A bear… that actually served in the military.
