Work and Survival in Guyana

From the beginning, work in Guyana has never been just about earning a living.

It has been about survival, endurance, and building a life out of land,

water, and time. The story of Guyana is written in the hands of its people.

Long before colonization, Indigenous communities worked the land and rivers with deep knowledge and

balance. Farming cassava, fishing, hunting, weaving,

and building were not called jobs. They were life itself. Work followed the seasons,

the river levels, and the forest. Nothing was wasted, and knowledge passed from elders to children

through observation and practice. When Europeans arrived, work took on a brutal new meaning.
