How to Crop Videos from YouTube: 4 Ways Without Losing Quality

Four ways to crop a YouTube video (browser, Revid, desktop editor, phone app), the aspect ratio each platform wants, and how to keep the result sharp and claim-free.

On this page

To crop a YouTube video, get the file (download your own from YouTube Studio, or paste the link into a tool that accepts YouTube links), open it in a cropper, pick an aspect ratio like 9:16, move the frame over your subject and export at the source resolution. Online tools are fastest; desktop editors give the most control.

The catch most guides skip: turning a 16:9 video into a vertical 9:16 clip keeps only about a third of the frame's width. A vertical slice of a 4K frame is still taller than 1920 pixels, so it stays sharp at 1080x1920. The same slice of a 1080p frame has to be enlarged to fill a phone screen, which is where blurry crops come from. Your source resolution decides the quality before you touch a crop handle.

Crop or trim: which one do you need?

People say "crop" for two different edits, and tools treat them separately.

You want toThe edit is calledWhat changes
Change the shape of the frame (horizontal to vertical, cut out the edges)Crop or reframeWidth and height of the picture
Keep only one moment of a long videoTrim or clipStart and end time
Both: one moment, as a vertical clipTrim, then cropTime and frame

Most of this guide covers cropping the frame, with trimming steps where a tool does both. If you only need to share a moment rather than a file, YouTube's Clip button (available on videos where it is enabled) creates a shareable link without any editing.

If you crop one clip a month, a browser tool is enough. If you post vertical clips from your long videos every week, use a tool that finds the moments and adds captions for you. If the subject moves around the frame, use a desktop editor.

Step 1: Get the video file the right way

For your own channel, download the original from YouTube Studio: open Content, hover over the video, click the three-dot Options menu and choose Download. You get the file YouTube stored, with no third-party site involved.

For someone else's video, stop and check the rules. YouTube's Terms of Service do not allow downloading other people's videos without permission, except through features YouTube provides. Reusing a short excerpt for commentary, criticism, news or teaching can fall under fair use in the US (or similar exceptions elsewhere), but cropping a video and reposting it as yours does not. Crediting the creator does not change that.

How to crop a YouTube video online

Browser croppers suit quick jobs: a vertical version for Stories, a square clip for a feed post, or cutting clutter out of the edges. If your computer can stream YouTube, it can run them.

Three-step flow: copy the YouTube URL, paste it into a crop tool, adjust start and end points
The link-based workflow most browser croppers follow
  1. Copy the video's URL, or download the file if the tool requires an upload. Many browser editors no longer import YouTube links, so check before you start.
  2. Paste the link or upload the file. The video opens in the editor with a crop frame over it.
  3. Choose a preset: 9:16 for Shorts, TikTok and Reels, 4:5 or 1:1 for feed posts, 16:9 for widescreen.
  4. Drag the frame so the subject sits in the center, and keep the aspect lock on so nothing stretches.
  5. Set the start and end points if you only need part of the video.
  6. Export at the highest resolution the plan allows.

Kapwing, Clideo, VEED and FlexClip are common browser options. Free tiers usually add a watermark or cap export quality: VEED's free plan, for example, exports at 720p with a "Made with VEED" watermark (see how Revid compares with VEED). Check the current plan of any tool before you rely on it for a final export. For a side-by-side of free croppers and the sizes to use, read the guide on how to crop video online.

If you already have the file and only need a new shape, Revid's resize video tool converts an upload to 9:16, 4:5, 16:9 or 1:1 in one step.

How to turn a YouTube video into vertical clips with Revid

When the goal is a stack of Shorts, Reels or TikToks from a long video you own, cropping by hand is the slow way. Revid's YouTube clip maker works from the link:

  1. Paste the YouTube link of your video.
  2. Revid's AI picks moments and turns them into short vertical clips.
  3. Choose one of 30 caption styles and fix any clip in the timeline editor.
  4. Export in 720p, 1080p or 4K, or publish and schedule straight to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

If TikTok is the main destination, the YouTube to TikTok converter follows the same flow. Sign-up is free and new accounts get free credits to try it, while regular creation uses the monthly credits of a paid plan, from $39/month. The tool is meant for videos you have the rights to. For the other ways to do this, including YouTube's own remix options, see how to turn a YouTube video into a Short.

How to crop a YouTube video in desktop software

A desktop editor is worth the extra download step when the subject moves, when the clip goes into a larger edit, or when you need an exact output size. Files are processed on your machine, and you control every export setting.

In DaVinci Resolve, which is free:

  1. Go to File > Project Settings > Master Settings and set a custom timeline resolution of 1080x1920 for a vertical clip.
  2. Import the video and drag it onto the timeline. The 16:9 clip appears small inside the tall frame.
  3. Open the Inspector, then Transform: raise Zoom until the clip fills the frame, and move Position X to put the subject in the center.
  4. If the subject walks across the shot, add keyframes on Position at the start and wherever the subject moves, so the crop follows them.
  5. Use the Cropping controls in the Inspector to shave off any edge you want to remove.
  6. On the Deliver page, export an MP4 (H.264) at 1080x1920 and the source frame rate.

In Adobe Premiere Pro, Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence creates a vertical or square version and tracks the action for you; adjust its keyframes where it picks the wrong subject. Both editors also offer masks, so you can isolate a shape (a circle for a picture-in-picture, for example) instead of a plain rectangle.

How to crop a YouTube video on your phone

You can crop on iPhone or Android once the video file is on the phone (for your own uploads, download it from YouTube Studio on a computer and transfer it, or record the original on the phone).

  1. Import the video into CapCut or InShot.
  2. Open the ratio or canvas option and choose 9:16, 4:5 or 1:1.
  3. Pinch and drag the video to frame the subject; use the crop tool to cut edges.
  4. Trim the start and end, then export at the highest resolution offered.

Phone apps are fine for single clips. For moving subjects or batches, the desktop or link-based methods above save time.

Which aspect ratio should you crop to?

Every feed has a native shape, and a video that fills it looks made for the platform. Black bars above and below a widescreen clip signal a repost.

Where the clip goesCrop toWhat the platform says
YouTube Shorts9:16 (square also counts)Square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes are classified as Shorts
TikTok9:16TikTok's Creator Academy recommends 1080x1920
Instagram Reels9:16Accepts 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 720 pixels and 30 FPS
Instagram and Facebook feed4:5 or 1:1The profile grid now shows vertical rectangles, not squares
LinkedIn1:1 or 4:5Accepts 1:2.4 to 2.4:1
YouTube (regular video)16:9Leave widescreen as is

Going from 16:9 to 9:16 is the hardest case, because most of the picture goes. Decide what the clip is about (a face, a hand on a product, a chart) and build the frame around it.

A 16:9 frame with a centered 9:16 vertical crop around a subject; the left and right sides are cut
A 9:16 crop of a 16:9 video keeps only the center of the frame

For converting between other ratios without stretching, see how to change the aspect ratio of a video.

Why bother with vertical at all: YouTube Shorts average over 200 billion daily views, as YouTube reported in August 2026. For broader audience figures, DemandSage keeps a third-party roundup of YouTube statistics and trends, and Global Media Insight publishes one on YouTube user numbers.

How to crop without losing quality

Cropping always enlarges part of the original frame, so plan for it:

  • Start from the highest resolution. Download the 4K or 1080p original, never a compressed copy. A 4K source survives a vertical crop; a 1080p source loses sharpness.
  • Match the source frame rate. Exporting a 60 fps clip at 30 fps (or the reverse) adds stutter.
  • Export MP4 with H.264 at the target size, such as 1080x1920 for vertical.
  • Crop once. Each re-export compresses the video again, so do the crop, trim and captions in one pass.
  • Keep the aspect lock on. Squeezing a frame to fit a new ratio stretches faces.

Common cropping mistakes to avoid

  • Black bars instead of a real crop. Fitting a widescreen clip inside a vertical canvas leaves bars and a tiny picture. Fill the frame and choose what to keep.
  • Cropping too tight. Leave some space above the head and around the subject, or the shot feels cramped.
  • Ignoring safe zones. Buttons, the caption and the account name sit over the bottom and right side of vertical feeds. Check your frame against the YouTube Shorts safe zone and the Instagram Reels safe zone before export.
  • Cutting off burned-in text. Subtitles or lower thirds from the original often fall outside a vertical crop. Re-caption the clip instead.
  • Reposting footage you don't own. Beyond takedowns, claimed Shorts over one minute are blocked worldwide.

FAQ

Can you crop a YouTube video without downloading it?

Yes, if the tool imports YouTube links. Revid's YouTube clip maker works from a pasted link; many browser croppers now require you to upload the file instead.

Can you crop a video in YouTube Studio?

No. The YouTube Studio editor lets you trim, cut and blur parts of your own uploads, but it has no tool to change the frame's shape, so download the video and crop it elsewhere.

Only with permission or within a copyright exception such as fair use for commentary, criticism or teaching. Crediting the creator is good practice but does not make a repost legal.

What size should a cropped YouTube Short be?

Use 9:16 at 1080x1920 pixels. YouTube treats square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes as Shorts.

Why does my cropped video look blurry?

The source was too small for the crop. A vertical slice of a 1080p video has to be enlarged to fill 1080x1920, so start from a 4K original when you can and export only once.
