How to Make Highlight Videos: 6 Steps, Specs and Length Data

A step-by-step guide to making highlight videos: story structure, editing, captions, platform specs, and what Revid's data on 176,367 TikToks says about length.

How to Make Highlight Videos That Get Noticed
On this page

To make a highlight video, pick one goal, pull only your strongest clips, open on a top moment, build to a strong finish, then add captions and music and export at 9:16 (1080x1920) for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, or 16:9 for YouTube. Most social highlight videos land between 15 and 60 seconds.

The mistake that sinks most highlight videos is cutting in chronological order: the best moment arrives at the end, after viewers have already scrolled away. In Clutch's October 2025 survey of 483 U.S. consumers, 88% said a video needs to grab their attention in 30 seconds or less, and only 9% said they give short-form videos their full attention.

That audience is large. In the same survey, 95% said they watch short-form videos regularly and 71% engage with them at least once a day (more in our short-form video statistics, and in SundaySky's roundup of video marketing statistics). A highlight video is the format built for that feed: your best moments, in order of impact, with nothing in between.

Step 1: Pick one goal and one audience

Decide what the video must do before you open an editor. The goal decides which clips make the cut, how it ends and where you post it. If a clip doesn't serve the goal, it goes, however good it looks.

Highlight typeSource footageWhat counts as a highlightHow it should end
Sports or recruiting reelGame film, practice clipsPlays where you make the decisive actionName, position, team, contact
Wedding or event recapCeremony, speeches, candid clipsEmotional peaks: vows, toasts, first dance, laughterThe strongest group or couple shot
GamingStream recordingsClutch plays, big fails, chat reactionsA prompt to watch the full stream
Podcast, webinar or talkThe full recordingQuotable lines, disagreements, surprising factsWhere to find the full episode
Brand or product recapEvent and product footageProduct in use, real reactionsOne clear call to action

The audience sets the tone. A highlight reel aimed at clients or recruiters on LinkedIn should be polished, calm and explicit about the value you offer. A gaming or travel highlight for TikTok can be raw, fast and built around one reaction.

Step 2: Gather and log your best clips

Watch all your footage once, start to finish, and write down the timestamp of every moment worth keeping. Grade each one A (must use), B (good filler) or C (cut). A tight highlight video is mostly A clips, with a few B clips to give the pacing room to breathe.

Then trim each clip to the action itself:

  • Start late: begin a beat before the peak, not at the setup.
  • Leave early: cut right after the payoff (the goal, the laugh, the line).
  • One idea per clip: if a clip contains two moments, split it into two.
  • Check quality: drop shaky, out-of-focus or badly lit clips unless the moment is irreplaceable.

For hours of footage (a full game, a stream, a webinar), logging by hand is the slowest part. An AI tool can do the first pass for you; the Revid workflow is further down. That shortcut is now common: in Wyzowl's 2026 survey, 63% of video marketers said they had used AI video tools to create or edit marketing videos, up from 51% a year earlier (more trends in Siege Media's video marketing statistics).

Step 3: Build the story: hook, build-up, payoff

Even a 20-second highlight video needs a shape. Use three parts:

  1. Hook: open with one of your two best clips. No logo reveal, no title card, no slow establishing shot.
  2. Build-up: the middle carries the rest of your A clips, arranged so the energy rises. Vary the clip types (action, reaction, wide shot, close-up) so it never feels repetitive.
  3. Payoff: end on your other top clip, then the call to action your goal needs (contact details, follow prompt, link to the full video).

The decision rule: rank your A clips, put number one or two first, the other at the very end, and sequence the middle by energy, not by time. Chronological order only wins when the story depends on it (a comeback, a wedding day).

Step 4: Cut the edit

This is where pacing is set. A few rules do most of the work:

  • Cut on action: switch clips mid-movement (a swing, a turn, a jump) so the cut feels invisible.
  • Cut on the beat: place cuts on strong beats of the music. Drop the music in first, then lay clips to it.
  • Vary clip length: short clips speed things up, a longer clip gives a big moment room. Equal lengths feel mechanical.
  • Use J-cuts and L-cuts: in a J-cut, the next clip's audio starts before its picture, which pulls viewers into the new scene. In an L-cut, the current audio keeps playing over the next shot, which is ideal for showing a reaction while someone is still talking.
  • Match the color: clips shot at different times of day look disjointed. Even out white balance and exposure first, then add a light grade (a little contrast goes a long way).
  • Mix the sound by hand: keep music under dialogue and key game or crowd audio. Lower it wherever someone speaks, and add small sound effects (a whoosh on a fast transition) sparingly.

Step 5: Add captions, text and music you can use

Captions make spoken lines readable on mute and in loud places, and they keep viewers reading through the build-up. An AI caption generator writes and times them in a few minutes; check names and jargon before you export. Keep captions and on-screen text away from the bottom and right edges of a vertical frame, where each app places its buttons and caption text.

On-screen text should label, not narrate: a player's name and number before their play, the speaker's name on a podcast clip, the score or stakes in a gaming moment. For a recruiting reel, spotlight yourself (an arrow or circle) before each play so a coach knows who to watch.

Music is where highlight videos get blocked. On YouTube, most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a Short, and some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.

Step 6: Export in the right format for each platform

Export one master at 9:16, 1080x1920, as an MP4 (H.264) at 30 or 60 fps, then make other versions for other placements. Don't post a horizontal 16:9 file to TikTok or Reels: it plays as a small strip with bars around it. A video resizer converts one edit to 9:16, 4:5, 16:9 or 1:1 without re-editing.

How long should a highlight video be?

For TikTok, Reels and Shorts, aim for 15 to 60 seconds; for YouTube or a portfolio page, 1 to 3 minutes. Length matters less than density, though. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median between 58K and 76K views. Videos of 61 to 90 seconds reached a 70K median, ahead of clips under 15 seconds (58K), which in turn earned the most shares per view (1.41 per 100 views). The full study of what makes a TikTok go viral has the method; the sample only includes videos that already passed 1,000 likes, so it shows what successful videos have in common, not causes.

Length alone barely moves views: every bucket lands between 58K and 76K median views (the 790 videos over 10 minutes are a small, unusual group). Clips under 15 seconds get shared the most per view.

Across Revid's full index of about 2.39 million TikToks from all posting dates, 16 to 30 second videos had the highest median (about 141K views), but that edge has faded for recent posts. The decision rule: make the video as long as your A clips last, and stop. If you want TikTok Creator Rewards, go past one minute; if you want Reels reach to non-followers, stay at 3 minutes or under.

How to make a highlight video with Revid

If your raw material is long footage, Revid handles the cutting and assembly so you can spend your time on the story:

  1. Open the AI sports highlights generator for game footage, or the long video to short video converter for podcasts, streams and talks, and upload your video.
  2. Revid's AI turns it into a short vertical video.
  3. Pick one of 30 caption styles; captions are generated automatically in 100+ languages.
  4. Open the timeline editor to reorder clips, trim and change the music.
  5. Export in 720p, 1080p or 4K at 30 or 60 fps, or publish and schedule it directly to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

For weddings and events shot as photos and clips, the wedding video maker picks the best moments and builds a highlight reel with transitions. If you produce highlight videos for clients, Scribbl's guide to AI for agencies covers where automation fits in a team workflow.

Captions, hashtags and covers that get it watched

The post caption should add something the video doesn't show: the stakes, the context, or a question that invites comments ("Which play was the best?"). In the same TikTok study, captions of 41 to 80 characters had the best median (67K views), and posts with no caption had 36K. A TikTok caption generator drafts options in that range.

Hashtags should describe the content, not beg for reach. Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags per post; with more, the caption won't post. On TikTok, Revid's data found 4 hashtags had the best median (77K views) and 3 hashtags 75K, while 9 or more dropped to 16K. A good mix: one broad tag for the niche (#basketball), one or two specific ones (#highschoolbasketball), one niche community tag.

Covers and thumbnails need the right size:

  • YouTube videos: 3840x2160 recommended (16:9, minimum width 640 px), up to 50 MB on desktop or 2 MB on mobile; custom thumbnails need a verified account.
  • YouTube Shorts: verified accounts can upload a custom 9:16 thumbnail (2160x3840 recommended) in YouTube Studio on a computer.
  • Instagram Reels: a 420x654 px cover, chosen before posting.

Use a sharp frame from your top moment with a few words of bold text that hint at the outcome.

FAQ

What is the best app to make highlight videos?

It depends on your footage. CapCut suits editing clips you filmed by hand, with a free tier that exports in 1080p; Revid suits turning long recordings or game footage into captioned vertical highlights and publishing them; Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve suit frame-by-frame control.

Can I make a good highlight video without expensive software?

Yes. Free editors handle cutting, captions and 1080p export, and the method above matters more than the tool. Revid sign-up is free and new accounts get free credits to try video creation, no credit card needed; regular creation then uses the monthly credits of a paid plan, from $39/month.

How do I make a sports highlight video for recruiting?

Put your best plays first, spotlight yourself before each play, and keep it short enough that a coach watches to the end. Finish with your name, position, team and contact details on screen.

Only through each app's licensed music library or with a license. Copyrighted tracks can get the audio muted or the video blocked, and on YouTube any Short over one minute with a Content ID claim is blocked globally.

Is a highlight video the same as a highlight reel?

Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. "Reel" is more common for portfolios and Instagram, "video" for event recaps and YouTube.
