A Double Portion

My teacher was gone… but his mantle was in my hands. I walked back

to the Jordan. The water looked different without Elijah beside me. I struck it

with his cloak and shouted: ‘Where is the God of Elijah?!’ The river split.

Heaven answered. The other prophets bowed: ‘The spirit of Elijah rests on

Elisha.’ A new chapter had begun. I healed water in Jericho with

a bowl of salt. And when mockers jeered, ‘Go up,

bald man!’ Judgment fell — a warning that God’s calling is not a game.
