Mimicry in the Woods

“Don’t look at its face—no matter what you hear.” That’s the rule Mia whispers to

her best friend Alex as they creep through the Pine Hollow woods, flashlights trembling

in their hands. For weeks, hikers had vanished after reporting a voice that sounded

like someone they loved… crying for help. Tonight, Mia and Alex hear

it. A soft sob. Then another. Then—“Alex… please… I’m hurt…”

It’s Alex’s sister’s voice. But she’s been missing for three months. Alex starts moving

toward the sound. Mia grabs his arm. “Remember the rule. It mimics.” But the voice cracks

again—broken, pleading—and Alex pulls away. Branches snap. Leaves crunch.
