An AI hiring tool rejected a perfect candidate because she didn't play sports.
A tech company built an AI to sort resumes, training it on their best employees, who were mostly
military vets. The AI learned that a common trait among these successful employees was a
history of playing sports. So, it started automatically rejecting anyone
without athletic experience. A highly qualified applicant who used a wheelchair and
had no sports on her resume was instantly tossed out. The AI wasn't programmed to be biased,
it just learned to connect sports with "good fit," creating a totally unexpected form
of discrimination.
