Puritan ministers accidentally created America's first literary anti-heroes. They started publishing
execution sermons and criminal confessions to scare people straight. The stories were
all about sinners repenting on the gallows, proving good triumphs over evil.
But readers got hooked on the drama, not the lesson. Soon, the stories weren’t
about repentance. They were about the criminal's clever schemes and defiance. Characters like
Henry Tufts, a master thief and con artist, became famous for outsmarting everyone.
In a nation that had just defied a king, these rule-breaking rogues became a
twisted reflection of the American dream.
