America was basically forced into World War I. The U.S. tried hard to stay
neutral, but its banks had invested huge amounts of money in Britain and France.
An Allied loss would have crashed the U.S. economy. Still,
President Wilson pushed for peace, and many Americans were against getting involved in a European
conflict. For nearly three years, the U.S. stayed out.
But when America finally joined in 1917, its impact was decisive. Fresh troops and
resources totally reinvigorated the Allies, shortening the war and saving countless
lives. It was the turning point that made America a global superpower.
