Normal Gait - Part 3: Biomechanical Concepts Joint range of motion is the primary kinematic
factor to be considered. Joint positions are constantly changing during walking. And joint motions
occur rapidly, making observation difficult. Specific joint positions or motions,
also known as critical events, contribute to the accomplishment of functional tasks.
Each phase of gait has one or more critical events at the ankle, hip,
or knee in the sagittal plane. Other more subtle motions occur in all three planes
at the foot, knee, hip, and pelvis. But these motions
are more difficult to appreciate through observation. Accordingly, the critical joint
