Your brain can learn patterns on autopilot, even when a key part is damaged. Scientists had people
play a simple reaction game where they pressed keys matching colors on a screen. Unbeknownst to them,
the colors appeared in a repeating sequence. As expected, people got faster over time,
a classic sign of subconscious learning. Then, they tested patients with damage to their
right parietal lobe, a brain region that usually lights up during this exact task.
Shockingly, the patients learned the hidden pattern just as well as the healthy group.
Their brains built that muscle memory despite the injury, proving that this specific brain area
isn't essential for this type of learning. Our brains are incredible at finding workarounds.
