Bread for the Puppies

We found a loaf of bread on our back step one morning. Then it happened again.

And again. One night, I stayed awake and watched through the window.

Just after midnight, a thin stray dog walked up carrying a wrapped loaf in his mouth.

He set it on the step, nudged it once, and left. The next morning,

three small puppies were eating from it. He wasn’t bringing food to us.

He was bringing it to them.
