On September 11, 1973, fighter jets bombed their own presidential palace live on radio.
This happened in Chile. The president was Salvador Allende, elected democratically
in 1970. He was Latin America’s first Marxist president chosen by popular vote.
Allende nationalized industries and expanded social programs. The policies divided Chile and alarmed
the United States during the Cold War. On September 11, 1973,
the Chilean military launched a coup. It was led by General Augusto Pinochet. The La Moneda Palace
in Santiago was bombed by the air force. Allende gave a final radio address to
the nation. He died inside the palace the same day. Pinochet took power
