You have to understand that the Civil Rights Movement was a total overhaul of American society,
not just a few protests. It rose from the ashes of Reconstruction and the brutality of Jim Crow.
When the courts finally ruled that separate wasn't equal, it took regular
people sitting at lunch counters in Greensboro to actually enforce it. That relentless
direct action is what bullied the system into passing the Civil Rights and Voting Rights
Acts. But with urban riots and immigration changes following right behind,
history shows us that progress is messy, violent, and constantly under
construction.
