Your bank account would basically glitch out of existence without this one invisible rule.
It is called concurrency control, and it is the absolute backbone of the internet.
Think about it, when thousands of people try to buy the same limited-edition sneaker at the exact
same second, the database has to stop the chaos. It uses something called Two-Phase
Locking. It is literally like a bathroom key, you lock the door,
do your thing, and nobody else gets in until you commit. But sometimes,
programs get stuck waiting on each other forever, creating a deadlock. The database actually
has to choose a victim and kill that process just to keep the system running.
