Coral reefs are disappearing faster than we can blink. These underwater cities built by
tiny animals called polyps house 30 percent of all marine life on just 0.2 percent of the ocean.
Here's the kicker: when water heats up by just half a degree above 28 Celsius,
corals kick out their algae partners and turn ghost white. This bleaching isn't just aesthetic.
The algae provide up to 95 percent of the coral's food through photosynthesis. Without them,
corals starve within weeks. Since the 1980s, we've lost 19 percent of all reefs globally.
The Great Barrier Reef alone lost half its coral cover between 1985 and 2012.
Ocean acidification makes it worse by dissolving their calcium carbonate skeletons.
