The secret to a killer first class isn't your lesson plan, it's the furniture.
Get there 15 minutes early and rearrange the tables into a U-shape or small groups so no one
has their back to the board. This instantly encourages communication. Before anyone arrives,
write the day's topics on the board to save time. When students walk in,
don't hand out packets yet. Start with a weird icebreaker like, "If you were a dragon,
what would you hoard?" It gets everyone talking. Then, set the rules: work
together, don't work ahead. Let them choose which problems they need help with most.
