Crossed the Line With My Best Friend

I think my best friend and I crossed a line, and now I don’t know how to go back

My best friend and I have known each other for years. We’ve always been close in that effortless

way — inside jokes, late-night talks, crashing on each other’s couches like it’s nothing.

People used to joke that we acted like a couple, and we’d laugh it off because obviously

we weren’t. Until it stopped being so obvious. It didn’t happen all at once.

It was small things. Sitting a little closer. Conversations that got quieter and

more personal. The kind of eye contact that lasts half a second too long.

I noticed it, but I didn’t say anything, because saying something would make it real.
