Virgil started with shepherds singing under trees. The Bucolics, ten pastoral poems

that changed everything. He wrote them during Rome's darkest hour when civil war ripped the empire apart

and soldiers seized farms from veterans. Virgil himself lost his land. So he wrote about

shepherds, about simple life, about loss disguised as poetry. The first eclogue
