A driver's sentence for killing someone was cut in half because the victim was partly to blame.
Yvette Bakko, driving impaired, pulled onto a highway going extremely slow.
She was rear-ended by an 18-year-old woman driving 130 in a 110 zone. The young driver
died instantly. But here's the twist: police found a video playing on a loop on the victim's
phone. The appeal court decided the victim's speeding and likely distraction significantly
contributed to the crash. This lowered Bakko's moral blame, and her sentence
was slashed from four years to just under two. It's a tragic case where blame wasn't
black and white.
