1959 — in the middle of a Soviet winter, nine trained hikers ran barefoot into the mountains… and
whatever chased them was never identified. They were deep in the frozen Ural Mountains,
camping near what would later be called Dyatlov Pass. When rescuers arrived weeks later,
the tent was still standing—but it had been cut open from the inside, as if escape mattered
more than survival. Boots, coats, and food were left behind in temperatures
cold enough to kill in minutes. The bodies were scattered across the snow.
Some froze to death barefoot. Others had crushed skulls and ribs, injuries doctors
