The ground beneath your feet is actually surfing on giant rafts of rock. It sounds crazy,
but the theory of Plate Tectonics proves the lithosphere is broken into plates that are constantly
moving. Alfred Wegener called it first when he saw continents fitting together like a
puzzle, but he couldn't explain how. The secret is convection currents in the
mantle acting like a conveyor belt. We used seismic waves to see deep inside,
finding a liquid outer core that creates our magnetic field and a solid metal inner core.
From mountains rising to oceans spreading, Earth is just one massive, slow-motion recycling
machine.
