Nitrogen makes up 78 percent of our atmosphere but plants cannot use it directly. This is where bacteria
become heroes. Certain soil bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia through a process
called nitrogen fixation. Plants absorb this ammonia and transform it into proteins.
When animals eat these plants, nitrogen moves up the food chain. After organisms
die, decomposer bacteria break down their bodies and release nitrogen back into
the soil. Some bacteria even convert nitrogen back into gas, returning it to
the atmosphere. This endless loop ensures life on Earth continues thriving.
Without these microscopic workers, our planet would be lifeless.
