Before we design a prosthesis or orthosis, we need to understand the person
behind it. That’s where the initial patient assessment begins. The assessment starts
with a deep dive into the patient’s medical history—we look at the cause of amputation
or disability. any comorbidities, and previous device experience. Next,
we examine the residual limb: its shape, volume, skin condition,
muscle strength, and any areas of pain or sensitivity. We assess functional
abilities—how the patient moves, their activity level, and lifestyle goals. This helps us
tailor the device to their real-world needs. Psychological readiness matters too.
