In parts of India, there's a saying: "Raising a daughter is like watering your neighbor's
garden." This cultural preference for sons has created a massive crisis. For decades,
it has fueled female infanticide and, more recently, sex-selective abortions. The result is a
staggering gender imbalance, with millions more men than women. This isn't just
a social issue; it's a security threat. A large population of frustrated young
men who can't find partners can become an unstable force. South Asia has a huge youth population,
a potential "demographic dividend," but this deep-rooted imbalance threatens to turn that asset into
a disaster.
