In 1953, an apprentice plumber named Harry Martindale was working alone in the cellar of
the Treasurer's House in York when he heard the distinct sound of a brass trumpet coming from
inside the wall. Suddenly, the head of a horse emerged directly through the bricks,
followed by a Roman soldier and an entire legion marching in formation right past his terrified
face. The most disturbing detail was that the soldiers appeared to be cut off at
the knees, looking as if they were wading through the solid stone floor of the basement.
Harry fled the house in terror, but years later, archaeologists excavating the site made a
discovery that turned his ghost story into a confirmed historical event. They found an original
