Greasers and Socs: A Dangerous Encounter

When I walked out of the movie house into the bright sunlight, all I could think

about was Paul Newman and getting home. I wished I looked tough like he does, even though my own

looks aren’t so bad—light-brown hair, green-gray eyes, and longer hair

than most guys wear. I usually walk home alone because I like watching movies without anyone beside

me; it’s like having someone read over your shoulder otherwise. Soda and Darry, my brothers,

don’t care much for books or movies, and neither does the rest of the gang,

so I’m used to going solo. Soda understands me more than Darry, who’s always tough

and serious, but he’s had to grow up fast. Soda probably never will.
