Hidden Lakes Beneath the Ocean

Did you know there are actual lakes hiding at the bottom of the ocean? They’re called brine

pools, and they form when super-salty water gets trapped in low spots on the

seafloor. The water inside the lake is so salty and dense that it doesn’t mix with

the ocean around it — so it creates a real shoreline, waves, and even little

underwater ‘beaches.’ Some animals can’t cross the surface because it’s too salty,

almost like a liquid barrier! And since it’s full of unusual chemicals, only very tough

deep-sea creatures can survive near it — like tube worms, mussels, and strange-looking

fish.
