That dangerous slum everyone called a chaotic mess was actually a highly organized society
with its own rules. In the 1930s, sociologist William Foote Whyte didn't just study a poor
Italian-American neighborhood from a distance—he moved in. For years,
he lived among the "corner boys," the local street gangs. He wanted to understand their world from
the inside. He discovered a complex social structure where a guy's position in the gang was
proven not just by fighting, but by bowling scores and loyalty. He saw how leaders
like "Doc" held power and how racketeers and politicians were part of everyday life.
This wasn't chaos; it was a hidden world, and he documented it all.
