The Battle of Mactan in 1521 was the first time indigenous Filipinos successfully resisted European
colonization. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines claiming lands for Spain,
but Lapu Lapu, a chieftain of Mactan Island, refused to submit to foreign rule.
When Magellan tried to assert dominance through force, Lapu Lapu and his warriors were ready.
Despite having only bamboo spears and wooden shields against Spanish steel and firearms,
they used their knowledge of the shallow waters and reefs to their advantage. Magellan waded into
the water with just sixty men, while Lapu Lapu commanded over a thousand warriors.
The Spaniards became trapped in the coral, their heavy armor slowing them down. Magellan was struck
