In 1916, during World War I, Allied General Douglas Haig called off
the First Battle of the Somme after five months of fighting. The Allies had advanced 125 square miles
but suffered massive casualties, with 420,000 British and 195,000 French soldiers lost,
while German losses exceeded 650,000. In 1978, the Jonestown massacre occurred in Guyana,
where Jim Jones led his Peoples Temple followers in a mass murder-suicide, resulting in the
deaths of 918 people, including over 270 children. This tragic event is one of the largest
mass suicides in modern history. In 1976, Spain's parliament approved a bill
