Lord of the Sabbath, True Rest

The disciples were hungry as they walked through the grainfields on the Sabbath. They plucked heads

of grain and ate as they went. The Pharisees watched closely. “Look,” they said,

“Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” Jesus stopped and

turned toward them. He reminded them of Scripture — how David once ate the bread of the

Presence when he was in need, and how the priests worked in the temple on the Sabbath and

were still innocent. Then Jesus spoke words that redefined everything: “The Sabbath was

made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” The Sabbath was never meant to be

a burden. It was meant to be a gift. A day of rest. A day of mercy.
