Shakespeare wrote Macbeth as a massive suck-up to King James I. It is basically
17th-century fan fiction designed to keep the playwright from getting fired. The play dropped
in 1606 right when James took over, and the guy was obsessed with hunting witches.
He even wrote a book called Demonology. That is exactly why the play opens with the weird sisters.
To us, witches are just Halloween costumes, but back then, people were terrified
they would actually ruin their lives. Shakespeare turned a political thriller into a supernatural
horror just to please one guy.
